Pretty decent fit for exploration really, although that small shield extender is worthless, lose it, an invulnerability field would be a sensible replacement (if it fits). I also always fit a Damage Control (meta 3 at least) to any frig I fly the difference it makes in ehp is astounding.

Lows would ideally be DC2 DDA2 (but I don't know if you have the cpu for that.

If you're having PG issues then for highsec PvE (lowsec is never PvE) you may find an afterburner is better than a mwd, it will still make you quicker than most of the rats (with half decent skills) and as it doesn't blow up your sig radius means you can range/speed/sig tank easily, but the MWD is much better for escaping from players and the cloak/mwd trick at gates etc.

I'm a 20 day old player and I can afford CPU wise both modules without problems. I will update the loadout with your suggestions.

1. Limited adaptive invulnerability field I
As you said yourself, much better than any SSE. I found out myself (the hard way) that SSEs are generally not worth considering (200something shield bonus is nothing to write home about when you can get flat percentage resistances from similar modules), and I actually use a invul field in my current Heron myself. Don't really understand why I got a SSE in the loadout up there, maybe I uploaded my older variant from the EVE client. Sorry for that.

2. Drone Damage Amplifier II
I thought of leaving the tier I variant for easier fitting for new players, but I can afford one myself and I've been playing for 20 days or so. If I can, they can too...C:

3. Damage Control II
My original thought was that I wanted my Heron to remain as stealthy as possible. Thus, an agility/speed boost would both help with staying away from aggro and aligning faster for warp. But in the end, you are right. A DCII does wonders for survivability if you are caught in sth nasty for whatever reason, while at the same time is easy to fit and uses just a midge of my minuscule cap. Good Addition. You are right. If I put an experimental AB there then I can enjoy my tractor beam. I want to keep the MWD on though for 2 reasons.

1. It makes navigating anomalies and doing your job that much faster.
2. I also use this Heron as a rig smuggler in low sec. I run L2s with a Corax, salvage with a custom Algos and manufacture Ancillary Current Routers, which I then smuggle to low sec for better profit. A MWD+Cloak can be very valuable in those scenarios...

As to the mwd/ab, you will be able to speed tank more/bigger rats with the ab and you can always switch it in for the lowsec runs.

fwiw I'd lose the DDA and fit a nanofiber if you're just doing a courier/smuggler run, the extra agility is priceless in getting away at gatecamps. Also maybe drop the analyzer and codebreaker for more invuls. There's a real risk a gatecamp will smartbomb you, as you can't warp cloaked, so all the extra hp/resists you can muster is useful. NB you won't be permarunning the invuls so cap doesn't matter so much, just flick em all on as you get to within a few thousand kms of the gate, and be ready on the shield booster as you land, so hopefully you can ride the wave of smart bomb damage and jump thru.

My setup for courier is 1 nano II, 1 DCU II, 2 Small alternating ASBs and a inv II. Its as you say though, a completely different mission altogether.

I would use a shield boost amp. Similar tank but invuls use so so so much cap on a frig especially when you have an MWD and no cap mods.

This loadout has been updated for the Odyssey expansion.

1. use your cargo scanner to scan containers before you start hacking them. If you cargo scan before you hack then you can focus your gathering efforts on particular types of cans in the loot explosion. It seems to help a little.

2. The SRA helps with scanning down data and relic sites. Due to the new probing formations, its much easier to get them now even without any probing rigs.

3. The scope sharpener and algorithm bank will boost your hacking considerably.

4. You do not need the salvager for exploration any more, feel free to replace it with a launcher/turret if you like.

Salutations from Sunny Greece...^^

One of the things I admired most when starting this game some weeks ago, was the mystery that lay in the far reaches of the deadspace. It was a realization that the vast known universe in this sandbox is much bigger than what is shown to you at first glance. And it is changing, evolving, connecting its parts with a vast and veiled network of tunnels, forgotten ruins and exotic places where even the laws of physics become warped.

Thus, probing became a very fun and fulfilling exercise for me. As a Caldari, I was quick to catch on the Heron frigate hull (especially since CCP was kind enough to give me one), and it became my favorite ship in these few weeks.

Here is the loadout that I currently use, I think it can do well for most Caldari newbies like me. Its cheap (under 5mil with rigs installed), easy to replace, fun to pilot and good for its intended purpose. At least for me, that is.

Ideally, for the purpose I want it a tractor beam would be peachy, but unfortunately I (and the other newbies that this is intended for) lack the necessary skills to support it gridwise. Other than that, its more or less what I want to bring along when probing. Of course, it goes without saying that as you progress your fitting and support skills you should replace all parts with their higher-tiered variants...C:
