Edit - 20 Jan 2010

Deleted old OP for lack of anything useful

changed rig sizes for new patch (a bit late i know)

Also changed down to faction items rather than deadspace.  still close enough effect with faction for 1/4 of the price.

Recent changes mean 69.5/80.1/90.1/71.1 resists with Dual IN reps.

Keeps a nice dps margin of 788 dps w/drones and 707 dps w/o drones.

Also ignore first 2 eft loadouts.  The 3rd shows updated stats (can we please have an option for deleting these!)

Old price 1.8B

I have this fit minus one thing.  I use the hyrbrid armature so i get a 50 drone bay and i lose the tracking bonus.  The drones are prolly more useful anyways but i think its a good job to be honest

Cool thanks - I was debating over the drones for a while when i was weighing up my options, then i figured that neutrons have poor tracking to begin with so i best make the most of the subsystem with the tracking bonus.  Im a drone lover myself so was a hard decision :)

Yeah, drones are definitely more useful than tracking. Without them you could be killed by a very patient frigate :D. I'd carry a set of ec-600s and a set of warrior 2s.
You also might want to reconsider active tanking. With a small cargo bay for cap boosters and only 800 burst active tank you aren't nearly as safe as you think.

One of the more balanced set ups I've seen.  I am a fan of active tanking on tech 3.  Talk about being able to be killed by a patient frig.....buffer is asking for it.  plus 1

I do like the setup, +1 for sure.  it looks like an almost ideal fitting really, for when T3 is more common and less primaried.  it's costly but who cares, you're flying a proteus, pimp that sucker.

however in the event you become primary(gee that would never happen) you better be quick to please consider another option, thanks! of Dodge.  for now, I think the better setup is huge plates, trimarks, slaves, ETC... just because having 55k armor will save your butt when primary more often than repping, especially with neuts.

The Problem of this fit is the missing Med slot for a Webber, cause everything smaller than a Battleship will be much faster as you if properly fitted

I fail to see how a 1min active tank is better then passive. ~700 effective boost will add you ~50k of effective hp in 1min. That added to your passive gets you about 80k of effective, providing that you will have time to boost it. Now i've seen a lot of passive proteus loadouts having ehp around 100k, so this loadout doesn't even reach this ehp amount even if repped all the time till cap ends.

Now passive/buffer tank advantages over active:

    1) Passive tank is invulnerable to neuting.
    2) Passive tank works much better against a group of high alpha ships. (5x tempests with howitzers fitted would prolly insta pop you)
    3) Passive tank works much better when in a gang with logistics.
    4) Passive tank doesn't need that much cap, meaning that you can swap cap booster for something like web, long range point etc.

And if you are going to use only one rep then whats the point fitting two (one rep fails, two fail even more because of the cap).

All this is true when in gang engaging a group of ships or solo taking on more then one ship. If you plan to shoot at crappy ships 1vs1, then i would suggest to buy something A LOT cheaper..

wow a real life ehp whore :s

Granted the buffer proteus has a more substantial role and i agree on your 4 points and also have this on my battleclinic resume http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/26919-Buffer-Proteus.html.  But i beleive your trapped in a little box world created where only buffer fits rule and fleet work is the norm, and cannot think outside of that box.

The trick to using a ship like this is selective targets and please consider another option, thanks! routines.  why lose a ship when you dont need to...  ie against 5 tempests as you say.

so basically you -1 the fit because you dont understand how to use a burst tank where actual user intervention is required and would rather go the lazy way with a buffer fit.  I mean c'mon!

Also, you got any impressive kill mails with either of your fits? I'm thinking of flying the proteus and have 2 fits in mind, some similar to your crash and burn and another, just want to know what your fits are capable of =P

hey guys did anyone test this fitting yet? well i did and its horrible... the cap on the t3 just isnt enough to make this ship good enough to run 2 MARs... as soon as u are facing a battleship with 1 heavy neut you are dead within seconds. your 4.5k armor just arent enough of a buffer for your huge rep cycles... you would need at least 2 medium cap boosters which wont fit on the proteus for pvp purposes. i will be going back to the buffer tanked one where i had 50k armor and i can recommend that to any other proteus pilot as well. u just instapop even to 2-3 BCs with med neuts.... the only possibility i see is a hybrid with 1 mar and a 1600 plate or so if u wanna active tank...

I got a proteus fit that works a charm, not as much EHP as mb sum1 would like for such an expensive fit,but the overall 971 DPS makes up for it.

    SubSytems
    Augmented plating
    friction extention
    power core
    hybrid propultion
    Localized injector

Highs 6x heavy T2 neutron blasters
Meds 1x Domination MWD 1x Imperial navy med cap booster 1x Dark blood warp scrambler
Lows 2x imperial navy EANMs 1x 1600mm rolled tungsten plate 1x damage control 3x shadowed serpentis Mag Stabs
2x T2 anti expl riggs 1x ancillary current router rigg
5x T2 hammerheads or a mixture of T2 worriors an light ecm if u so choose.

    EM>77% THERM>85% KIN>92.5% EXPL>73%
    over 143K EHP with slaves
812 DPS just turrets with drones 971 DPS
    Stable with MWD off

Its costly but I find an ultimate fleet fit for melting BCs/BSs
You may complain about the ACR rigg, but id prefer to have the dps and tank i have rather than go without on either the tank or dps side of things.
*This fit would melt that active tanked proteus, wudnt even be funny

Any of you naysayers about active tanks ever hear about selective targeting? Obviously I;m not going up against 5 tempests, I'm thinking a single bc/bs that is generally not fitted with a neut. +1 for awesomeness, and buffer tank whiners can go hide in their fleets.
