BattleClinic’s EvE-Online Player Guide

Current Version April 2009
First offered June 2004

Now edited by Ruprect Belganor

Here it is, the BattleClinic Player Guide for EvE-Online. Completely overhauled and updated for Apocrypha, we have worked hard and are very excited to bring you this 77 page fact and fun filled information pack - we hope it helps.

The guide is intended to introduce new players to EvE and enhance more experienced players knowledge. Even those with a year in game may find a few handy hints. New players are also recommended to take the beginning in-game tutorials and read the official new player guide at eve-online.com.

We aim to update the guide regularly so we encourage feedback on errors/omissions/enhancements or just to say what you liked and didn’t like. Future versions will be uploaded to this topic thread.

The guide has hyperlinks for easy navigation for viewing on-screen. If you want to print it out, save paper and print 2-up Portrait and double-sided (~20 pages).

The previous editions have been downloaded a total of 65,247 times.

Enjoy, and as always, Fight Smart!

Found an error -- In the section on salvage, it says you need to have looted the wreck before you can salvage it.  In actuality, you don't have to loot first.  If you salvage before you loot, the wreck just drops a can with its loot contents.

I don't know if that causes a problem if the wreck wasn't yours, though.

It poses no problem. you are flagged the same looting from wreck or looting from can.

i usually dont bother looting wrecks i just tracktor them all close while starting salvas at 5km away.

at the end if i have tracktored everything in 20km radius i empty the cans in a row.

much easyer than to keep track of what is looted and what is not and trag those closer.

Excellent guide, I just started playing Eve yesterday and this guide is a gem!

I have a question tho, when I press F-10, I do not see a "Display Settings" tab or button or anything.  Has something changed in game since this document was written?

    e.g  <text from the guide>
You can also use the map to find agents who will work with you, right now. If you want to locate every agent in EVE who will work with you, press F10. Click the display settings,........

If you press F10, the Map will open.
Somewhere in the upper left there´s a control window to Filter useful Data in/out of the Map.
That´s where the Display Settings Tab is supposed to be, but i haven´t been playing the last few weeks and can´t really remember the exact Tabs.

wow, im not new to eve and i was getting to a dangerous point in what i knew about the game, although i didnt realise it. i thought this would be a quick scan and id read bits of it, ive started reading every word twice and ive filled in many vast gaps in my knowelede of eve, ones i never would have known about otherwise. Each section i reinforce the knoweldege i have and learn something new aswell. massive thankyou to everyone who put time and effort into this ill be recomending it to all our corp rookies and pros alike next time i log on :)

Just finished reading the new version and want to extend my compliments on an excellent read for the new and lesser experienced player like myself. As someone mentioned, it helped fill in a number of gaps in the knowledge. Big thumbs up for the hard work.

I also noted several spelling/grammar errors which may or may not be of importance to others. If it is to the authors, I'd be happy to volunteer to proof in the future if it's of interest. This in no way detracts from the excellent work done by everyone involved and should not be construed as a negative--just a way to be able to 'give back' to the community as I doubt I'll ever surpass the knowledge consistently demonstrated on this forum.

Again, my compliments on an outstanding guide.

I just want to say thanks and good job on the New Player Guide. EvE is VERY complicated and can easily drive a new player to give up when they have no idea how to correct their mistakes... or even to know when they are making mistakes. This Guide helps new players at least get their foot in the door, so they can get over the beginning learning curve and start enjoying the game. However, a new player must understand this is just a quick boost to get started. After one gets their sea legs, there is still a ton of stuff to learn after that.

It's very nice to have a guide like this. :D

(I read the chapter about salvaging and it says you need a Salvager Tackle to salvage. Such a tackle is 20 Mil so I thought I wasn't ready to salvage yet. Later I found out that the tackle wasn't needed, that you need a Salvager I instead.)

Well the new guide has been posted for a few weeks now and downloaded over a thousand times which is fantastic.

We want to continue to provide a quality guide so please feel free to provide feedback.

At this point I also just want to give kudos and thanks to Vavutsikarios whom has been pivotal in clarifying many items that were in doubt or quite simply just wrong.  :notworthy:

Cheers buddy, I'm looking forward to your feedback on this version.

Excellent guide as to the "how"
Leaves out a few things on the "why" "waht" and "where", but i guess that would take out some of the fun??
One small error: largest industrials can take up to 36K cargo, with rigs/skills/cargoexpanders.
T2 can go up to 38K
(Still does not help with those bloody lvl4 courier storylines at 40K cargo, but hey...)

Was helping a newbie out today and linked this to him. In the process I noticed that it had been updated, I hadn't actually looked at it in a couple years and I must say it looks like it has a lot more material than when I first read it.

However, the combat probing section leaves much to be desired. There is no mention of using the directional to narrow down the location of your target first, something that is absolutely vital to being effective if your prey knows how to use his directional scanner. It is something that all the vets expect people to know but which most people won't thing of on their own and which is skipped over in most guides like this resulting in people like me who didn't learn to do it till I had been playing more than 2 years.

It seems even more relevant for a new player guide since they reduced the skill requirements for cloaking.

If it would be useful I could write a section on it if someone could tell me how to submit it for review and possibly addition to the next version.

    Hi.
I've been looking for an updated guide for beginers for a while now and all i can find are 2006-2008 guides.I like the feedback on this one and i will follow the post to see if you get around to updating it to the current EVE era :)

I am more interested in the Fighter aspect of the game , did 2 trials (didn't have the time back then to continue though i really liked the game) on fighter with diferent factions, didn't like mining at all , but couldn't find a way to make ISK verry well as a fighter. I tried the pirate NPC farming but either i was doing something wrong or dunno what but i was waiting hours for one npc to show up , and i read something about them respowning imediately somehow. Anyhoo, few of the thing that i want to read about , plenty more where those came from :). Can't wait for the updated guide

    @Bluntzone
This guide is reasonably up to date (mid 2009). Check part 9 "PvE - Mission Running" for the easiest way to make ISK early in the game.

Hi. Read the guide , really nice , makes me wanna play the game even more.

But i can't decide on what race to start with , i mean i understand from the guide that statswise there is no difference but what about ships of a race , weapons they use ?

I am more inclined towards Shield tanking as it feels a bit safer knowing that still having that armor left gives you time to escape , at the same time i like the way Amarr and Galente ships look more then Minmatar and Caldari.

I also hear that Minmatar ships are reasonably faster then the rest in general and that Caldari ships with missiles are preffered for mission running and PVE. Is there anything to these assumptions , or am i just misslead?

I would like to play a fighter , run kill missions mostly making ISK out of salvaging. Can't decide between style of play if i want to be sniping from long distance or get close and personal , so really don't know what race to chose. Any constructive criticism is apreciated so fire away :)

The race decission is best made on things other than the ships they fly. This is because with 3 days of skill training you can be functional (not good, but functional) in the frigates of all 4 races and choose which ships to fly that way. the race of your character does not affect what ships you can fly, and since early 2009, you don't even start with a big leg up in your starting races ships.

The factors I suggest using to select a race are as follows:
    1. Which race's portraits do you prefer? You will be looking at your characters portrait in chat and you character window for as long as you play. Make sure you can live with that. There are some bloodlines that are near impossible to make not fugly.

    2. Which race's ideology (described on the character creation screens) would be easiest for you to role play. Even if you don't currently intend to do any role playing with the prime fiction your character race will affect any role play you may decide to do in the future.

For deciding what to fly, is suggest you just give them all a try. Start with whatever your initial race is but, start cross training immediately and try running missions or PvPing in cheap frigates of all the race to see which is the most fun to you.

When I was trying to recruit about a dozen fish from a friend's dorm I helped them set up trial accounts and bought the skill books for them to train the bare minimum skills for a lot of the 1st day style loadouts here on battleclinic (got at least 4 loadouts for each race). Then as part of a lan party the dorm held, we had a frigate free for all outside a station where I had stockpiled about 100 fitted frigs they could blow up in the corp hanger. By far the hardest part of that entire operation was fitting all those ships, it took hours.

I'll attach the skill plan I had them train, it is made against a dummy character that has no skills at all so it can be loaded on any character in EveMon, no matter what their current skills are.

I would also attach the list of loadouts we used (they were all PvP) but I can't seem to find that list.

A little late to the party, but this is the greatest EVE guide I've seen. Being a brand new player green to all that is EVE, I appreciate this.

Awesome guide, helped me tremendously. It seems slightly out of date due to the section on learning skills, but 10/10 nonetheless. I will be buying my next GTC from you guys for hosting this.
